Bulk excavation vs detailed excavation
Two phrases that show up on every commercial excavation tender, and what they mean on site.
Bulk excavation
Bulk excavation, also called mass excavation, removes the main volume of material from a site: the hole for an underground parkade, a basement or a building foundation. It is a production job. The measures that matter are cubic metres per day, truck turnaround and keeping pace with the shoring contractor as the walls go down in lifts.
Bulk excavation is usually done with large excavators loading trucks directly, often from a ramp that is removed last.
Detailed excavation
Detailed excavation is the precise work that follows: footings, pile caps, elevator and sump pits, grade beams, manholes and service trenches at the bottom of the hole. Tolerances are tighter, the work is surrounded by other trades, and machines are often smaller — sometimes lowered into the excavation by crane.
Why the difference matters
- Bulk excavation is priced and planned around volume and haul; detailed excavation around time, accuracy and coordination.
- The machine sizes are different, so the contractor needs a fleet that covers both.
- A clean hand-off between the two keeps the concrete trades from waiting.
PCE does both. See our work beside high-rise towers for Matcon, and our commercial and high-rise excavation service.
