Environmental excavation and remediation
Creek restoration, habitat protection, fisheries projects and oil spill clean-up. PCE crews are used to working in sensitive environments under strict regulatory and safety standards.
What this covers
- Creek and riparian restoration
- Fisheries and fish habitat projects
- Oil spill clean-up
- Wildfire debris cleanup and site restoration
- Derelict vehicle and debris recovery on difficult ground
- Dam, culvert and crossing upgrades beside live water
- Remote environmental work reached by barge
Environmental work asks more of an excavation crew than moving dirt. Work areas have to be isolated from the water, sediment controlled, spoil and debris kept where they belong, and machines kept clean and fuelled away from the creek.
PCE has worked repeatedly with Matcon and Matcon Environmental on this kind of work — at Paul Lake near Kamloops, in Lytton after the wildfire, around Lillooet, and on the coast at Rivers Inlet.
Common questions
What approvals apply to excavation near a stream in BC?
Several layers can apply. The Water Sustainability Act requires a notification (at least 45 days ahead for listed low-risk changes) or a change approval for work in and about a stream. The federal Fisheries Act may require a DFO review or authorization. Under the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation, residential, commercial or industrial development within 30 m of a stream needs a Qualified Environmental Professional’s assessment where the regulation applies, and most cities add their own streamside rules.
When can instream work happen?
The province sets timing windows for instream work by region. On environmental projects the consultant and the permits set the window, and the excavation crew works within it.
What happens if excavation turns up artifacts or remains?
BC’s Heritage Conservation Act protects sites with evidence of human habitation or use before 1846, on public and private land, recorded or not. The Archaeology Branch asks that finds and remains not be disturbed and that the Branch be contacted; for possible human remains, contact it immediately.
What environmental work has PCE done?
PCE has worked with Matcon and Matcon Environmental on the Paul Lake dam upgrade near Kamloops, wildfire cleanup in Lytton, environmental cleanup around Lillooet and remote work at Rivers Inlet, plus creek restoration, fisheries and habitat work and oil spill clean-up.
