A large share of civil work happens below grade. PCE crews dig and work inside trench shoring boxes, lay and bed pipe, set precast manholes and vaults, and backfill and compact to spec under roads and sidewalks.
Precast vaults and large manhole sections are set with a mobile crane while the excavation is held open; steel road plates keep traffic moving over open trenches.
