Archaeological finds during excavation in BC

BC has thousands of recorded archaeological sites and many more unrecorded ones. The law protects both.

Under section 12.1 of the Heritage Conservation Act, no one may damage, excavate, dig in or alter a site that contains physical evidence of human habitation or use before 1846 without a permit. This applies on public and private land, whether or not the site is recorded.

If you find something

The Archaeology Branch asks that archaeological finds and remains not be disturbed, and that the Branch be contacted. For possible human remains, contact the Branch immediately; the Branch notifies the coroner and police.

Before you dig

On projects near water, on old village sites or on undeveloped land, ask early whether an archaeological overview or assessment is needed. Finding out in the middle of excavation is the expensive way.
